BASEBALL (12-11-1, 5-5 Commonwealth): Apr. 17 at Frostburg (2); Apr. 21 at Widener (2).

Juniata opened the week by getting swept by visiting Messiah in a make-up Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Monday. The Eagles lost the first game, 8-6, in eight innings. Juniata owned a 6-4 lead heading into the top of the seventh but the Falcons scored two runs on a pinch-hit two-run home run and then won the outing with two more in the eighth. Junior first baseman Tim Dobson (Millville/Millville, NJ) was 3 for 4 with two RBI, a home run and a run scored. Senior left fielder Fred Heaton (Central/Roaring Spring) went 2 for 3, knocked in two and had a stolen base. Junior designated hitter Tim Keeley (Caledonia-Mumford/Caledonia, NY) was 2 for 4 and scored three times. In the night cap on Monday, Juniata lost, 3-0. Senior second baseman Lucas Kelleher (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) was 2 for 3 in the outing and had two of the three blue and gold hits in the game. On Friday, the Eagles lost to visiting York (Pa.), 11-8. Juniata was down 11-0 heading into the ninth inning, but tallied eight runs with two outs before the rally was ended. Heaton was 2 of 3 at the plate, while sophomore second baseman Chad Moyer (Red Lion/Red Lion) was 2 for 4 and had an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Adam Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) went 2 for 2 with two RBI, a double and a run scored. On Saturday, Juniata got back into the hunt for a playoff spot in the Commonwealth with a two-game sweep of visiting Elizabethtown. The Eagles took the opener, 5-4, when Heaton delivered a one-out, run-scoring single to right field in the bottom of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie. Heaton finished 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI. He was also hit by a pitch two times in the contest. Kelleher, who played right field in the game, was 3 for 3 with two RBI, a double and a run scored. Freshman shortstop Marc Frailey (Middletown Area/Middletown) was 3 for 3, including a double and two runs scored. He touched home for the winning run. Junior catcher Matt Bowers (Westminster/Westminster, MD) went 2 for 3 and knocked in a run in the first inning. Junior pitcher Clint Wevodau (Northern Lebanon/Annville) went the distance on the mound and gave up just two earned runs and seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. In the second tilt, senior center fielder Matt Eisenberg (Big Spring/Newville), who was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, punched a two-out RBI single through the right side to break a 6-6 tied in the bottom of the fifth. His hit helped lead the Eagles to an 8-7 win. Frailey was 4 for 4 (7 of 7 on the day) with an RBI, while Dobson went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a home run (seventh of the year), four RBI and a run scored. Keeley was 3 for 4, including a double, a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore Steve Brink (Central Columbia/Nescopeck) got the win on the mound in relief of sophomore Paul Evans (Huntingdon/Huntingdon). Brink is now 2-0 on the season. Freshman Eric Hatten (DuBois Area/DuBois) allowed one unearned run in two innings of work to get the first save of his career.



MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (13-12, 7-7 EIVA Tait): Apr. 21 at Rutgers-Newark, EIVA Div. I Quarterfinals.

Juniata was not in action this past week, but will return to the court on Saturday at Rutgers-Newark for the quarterfinal round of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Division I playoffs.



SOFTBALL (11-10-1, 3-5 Commonwealth): Apr. 18, Elizabethtown (2); Apr. 21 at Lebanon Valley.

Juniata went 3-2 on the week, including 2-1 in the Commonwealth Conference. On Monday, the Eagles split a pair against visiting Lycoming, winning the first, 2-0, but losing the second, 2-0. In the opener on the day, freshman right fielder Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) was 2 for 4 with a stolen base, while sophomore left fielder Lauren Baker (Susquehannock/Spring Grove) was 2 for 3 and scored a run. Freshman third baseman Cass Dutzer (Danville/Riverside) went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a double, while senior first baseman Hillary Della Penna (Pompton Lakes/Pompton Lakes, NJ) was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Junior pitcher Christie Matthews (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) went the distance and got the win. She allowed just four hits and three walks, and she struck out four batters. In the second game against the Warriors, Gable, who pitched all seven innings, was 2 for 3 with a double, while freshman second baseman Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg) went 2 for 3 as well. On Tuesday, the Eagles journeyed to Susquehanna to replay a Commonwealth contest that was suspended due to darkness back in late March. Juniata dropped a 4-1 count to the Crusaders despite getting a 1-for-3, one-run and one-stolen base performance from Herr. On Friday, the blue and gold diamond squad swept visiting Widener with a pair of 1-0 decisions. Gable went the distance off the rubber and got the win in the first game. She struck out three, walked four and scattered six hits throughout the Lady Pioneer lineup. Baker was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while freshman right fielder Michele Volaric (Immaculate Heart Academy/Elmwood Park, NJ) was 1 for 3 and scored the lone run in the tilt. In the second contest, Matthews tossed her second shut out of the week and got the victory. She allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out three. Gable was 2 for 3 and scored the game-winning run on a fielder's choice in the third. Dutzer was 2 for 3 with a double, while freshman catcher Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville) was 2 for 3 as well.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD: Apr. 21 at Messiah Invitational.

The Eagles traveled to the Income Tax Classic at Bucknell on Saturday, but the small schools in attendance did not receive a team score for the day. The outing was most made up of upper-division opponents. Sophomore Nick Wolfe (McConnellsburg/McConnellsburg) was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.32) and sixth in the 400-meter dash (50.85). Senior Josh Kline (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) placed fifth in the javelin (177' 2") and set the school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 76' 1 1/2" (15th place on the day). Junior John McNitt (Indian Valley/Reedsville) took fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles (17.64). Freshman Jimmie Gray (Frederick/Frederick, MD) placed eighth in the 400-meter run (51.61), while junior Ashley Mort (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg) took ninth in the 100- (11.42) and 200-meter (22.91) dashes. Sophomore Noah Fredette (Weedsport/Weedsport, NY) was ninth in the 800 meters (1:58.52). Senior Scott Hobbie (The Hill School/Duncannon) placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a program record time of 10:34.0. Senior John Creuzberger (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) was seventh in the discus (134' 10") and 10th in the shot put (41' 10").

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD: Apr. 18 at Pitt-Johnstown; Apr. 21 at Messiah Invitational.

Juniata competed at the Income Tax Classic held at Bucknell on Saturday and held its own against mostly upper-division talent. The Eagles and other small schools in attendance, did not receive a team score for their efforts. Freshman Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) placed fourth in 400 meters with a school record time of 1:00.06. She broke her own program standard in the event. Junior Jessica Sprankle (Tyrone/Tyrone) placed sixth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:10.48) and ninth in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.69). Junior Jenni Anderson (Dubuque/Dubuque, IA) turned in a fifth-place effort in the javelin (102' 8 1/4"), while freshman Andrea Denkovich (Greencastle-Antrim/Greencastle) was 10th in the same event (87' 7 1/4"). Sophomore Hillary Bright (Juniata Valley/Spruce Creek) took eighth in the triple jump (34' 5"), while junior Toni Yorks (Indian Valley/Burnham) placed eighth (1:04.95) in the 400 meters.
