HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Chris Hansen, recently retired as the chief pediatric consultant for the New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services, will lecture at Juniata College on "War: Not Healthy for Children and Other Living Things" at 7 p.m., Oct. 22, in the auditorium of the von Liebig Center for Science on the Juniata campus.

The event is free and open to the public. The program is sponsored by the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.

Hansen worked for the New Jersey state agency from 1989 until retiring in May 2002. His medical career has always intersected with his interest in social issues. He has worked for the U.S. Public Health Service on Indian reservations in New Mexico and Arizona and worked in the Mississippi Delta region as an investigative officer ensuring compliance with the nondiscrimination requirements of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Hansen also volunteered for medical relief forces in 1968 in Biafra and Nigeria and has volunteered in humanitarian efforts in Siberia, Nicaragua, Tanzania and Haiti.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Haverford College in Haverford, Pa., and earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He earned a master's degree in public health from Harvard University in 1965 and became a Fellow of Pediatrics at Harvard in 1966.

Hansen helped found the Trenton (N.J.) Neighborhood Family Health Center in 1970 and started a program for the New Jersey Youth and Family Services division, where pediatric nurses served as consultants in agency field offices.
