MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- A school record for the women and two individual first-place finishes highlighted Juniata College results at the State Farm Shell Games, held Saturday, Feb. 2, at West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va.
Freshman Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) finished 15th in the pole vault after clearing the height of 8-6 ¼, broking a three-way tie for the school record in the indoor pole vault by one centimeter.
Sophomore Megan Lamens (Schellsburg, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) posted a pair of performances that were among the top 10 at the meet, and cracked the top five in the Juniata performance rankings. Lamens finished seventh overall in the shot put with a throw of 35-7 ¾, good enough for second all-time at Juniata, while her long jump of 15-6 ¾ ranks third on the all-time list and earned her eighth place in the meet.
Freshman Megan McQuillan (Severna Park, Md./Seton Keough) and sophomore Laura Rupprecht (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) moved into second and third, respectively, on the Juniata all-time list in the 800m as they turned in times of 2:32.21 and 2:32.34. In doing so, they finished fifth and sixth in the meet, respectively.
Sophomore Melissa Johnson (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy) turned in a time of 27.89 in the 200m to finish 12th in the meet and move into third all-time for Juniata College in that event.
Freshman Courtney DeGemmis (Lansdale, Pa./Methacton) finished sixth in the 400m race with a time of 1:05.00, which was good enough to move her into fifth on the Juniata College all-time list.
Other top-five finishers in the meet for the Juniata women include junior Kelsey Buffenmyer (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) and the 4x400m relay team. Buffenmyer finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.52 meters (4' 11.75"). The 4x400m relay team of Johnson, DeGemmis, Cassie Majocha (Upper Burrell, Pa./Burrell), and McQuillan finished fourth with a time of 4:24.99.
In the men's events, Juniata posted six top-five finishes in the meet as well as six performances among the Juniata College all-time top five, but it was senior Matt Booth (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and sophomore Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield) who highlighted the Eagle performances with first place finishes.
Booth won the long jump with a leap of 21-4 ¼, and finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 42-11. He also finished 13th in the 60m dash with a time of 7.41 seconds.
Bailey captured Juniata's other championship of the day, winning the 5000m race with a time of 16:04.82. That effort moved him into third place among all-time performances in the event at Juniata.
Sophomore Sam Williams (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) also turned in a strong performance in the 5000m race, finishing fourth with a time of 16:26.98. That time placed him fourth on the top-five all-time list at Juniata.
Sophomore Jeremy Boback (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) threw a personal best 33-1 ¾ in the weight throw to solidify his hold on second place on the Juniata all-time list.
Senior Eric Hoover (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) also solidified his grip on fourth place in the all-time rankings in the 800m race as he ran an indoor personal best time of 2:04.09 to finish ninth in the race. His brother, senior Jason Hoover (Wilmington, De./Brandywine) also had a good weekend, running a time of 9:35.33 in the 3000m race to move into fourth on Juniata's all-time list in that event.
The final top-five Juniata College all-time performance came from junior Tripp Rudolph (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who turned in a personal best time of 4:34.57 in the mile to move into third on the all-time list, while finishing fourth in the race.
Juniata will compete at two events this weekend, the Susquehanna Invitational on Friday, Feb. 8, in Selinsgrove, Pa., and the Bucknell Winter Classic on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Lewisburg, Pa.
