FOOTBALL (1-0, 1-0 MAC): Sept. 15 at Albright.
Juniata began the 2001 season with a thrilling, 28-26, win over visiting FDU-Madison on Saturday afternoon. It marked the first victory on opening day for the Eagles since 1996. Junior place-kicker Dusty Lehr (Bermudian Springs/New Oxford) drilled a career-long 33-yard field goal with nine seconds to play to put Juniata ahead by the final count. It was the first time that the blue and gold gridders have won a contest with a field goal since 1987 when Keith Watson hit a 40-yard attempt to beat Lycoming, 10-7 (a span of 135 games). Lehr also averaged 32.6 yards a punt and made one of his two tries on point-after kicks. Freshman Greg Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) became the first Juniata freshman to start at quarterback in over 50 years and he responded by completing a College Hill single-game record 32 passes on a program-standard 66 attempts. His 66 attempts also tied a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) record. Overall, he threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Troutman, who also had 28 yards rushing on seven attempts, led Juniata on its final scoring drive that went from the Eagle 15 with 1:37 left and the blue and gold owning just one timeout. He was seven of nine on the drive for 63 yards. He established a school single-game record for total offensive plays as well with 73. Sophomore running back Craig Moshier (Coudersport/Coudersport) posted the second 100-yard rushing day of his career with 141 yards on 31 tries. He also scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter and finished with three catches for 17 yards. Junior wide receiver Nate Leach (Shade/Central City) caught a game-best seven passes for 94 yards and he had an eight-yard touchdown reception to start the third quarter. Senior wide receiver Lucas Kelleher (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) hauled in six balls for 89 yards, while senior wide out Andy Radomsky (West Branch/Morrisdale) had four catches for 37 yards, including a leaping six-yard touchdown snag in the first quarter. Juniata also set a College Hill single-game team record for total plays with 107. Defensively, senior inside linebacker Josh Seiders (Wyomissing/Wyomissing Hills) led all players with 16 tackles, including three for lost yardage and a quarterback sack. Junior defensive end Fred Taber (Calvert Hall College/Bel Air, MD) made a career-best 10 stops, including four behind the line of scrimmage, two sacks and knocked down a pass. Junior outside linebacker Matthew Wharton (Cambria Heights/Dysart) posted seven tackles and recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Senior outside linebacker Jason Stouffer (Newport/Newport) intercepted two passes and returned them for 66 yards. He also had five tackles, while junior cornerback Paul Evans (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) came through with five stops, one interception, one fumble recovery, one sack and two pass break-ups.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (1-1, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth): Sept. 11 at Lycoming; Sept. 15, Widener.
The Eagles started the year with a 7-2 win at home over Division II Clarion. Junior Jenny Thompson (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford, NY) and senior Bethany Eisemann (Ephrata/Ephrata) were two-time winners on the day. Jenny Thompson posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles and teamed with Eisemann to win at second doubles, 8-5, in a pro-set. Eisemann was triumphant at fifth singles, 6-4, 6-4. Senior Lisa Dumansky (Nutley/Nutley, NJ) was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at first singles, while freshmen Libby Cooney (Forest Hills/South Fork) and Steph Shaver (Central Cambria/Ebensburg) won at fourth (6-3, 6-3) and sixth (6-0, 6-1) singles, respectively. Junior Alexina Thompson (Pittsford Mendon/Pittsford, NY) and freshman Teresa Ralicki (Biglerville/Gettysburg) paired for an 8-5 victory at third doubles. On Saturday, Juniata opened MAC Commonwealth League action with a 7-2 loss at defending league champion Moravian. Dumansky won at first singles, 6-2, 6-2, and earned an 8-4 pro-set win at first doubles with junior Liz Osche (Acton-Boxborough/Acton, MA).

WOMEN'S SOCCER (3-1): Sept. 15, Lebanon Valley.
Juniata traveled to its second tournament in as many weeks over the weekend and placed third at the Blue Devil Days Inn two-day outing hosted by SUNY Fredonia on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Eagles suffered their first loss of the year, 6-1, to Grove City. Juniata was down, 3-0, at halftime and was out shot, 22-7, on the day. Freshman forward Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, NJ) tallied an unassisted goal with 23:40 showing in the second half to get the Eagles on the board. Freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Treon (Hollidaysburg/Duncansville) made 12 saves on the day. On Saturday, Juniata rebounded with a 3-0 win over Medaille, after the score was 0-0 at halftime. Junior midfield/forward Rose Bender (Cambria Heights/Carrolltown) tallied the first goal of the game off an assist from freshman forward Erin Harter (Penn Trafford/Trafford) with 23:46 to go in the game. Shoaf found the back of the net for the second time in as many days with an unassisted score with 15:16 to play. Freshman forward Sarah Lester (Thomas Jefferson/Jefferson Hills) had the final goal of the game, while freshman midfield/forward Angela Condor (Bishop Carroll/Loretto) was credited with the assist. Treon went the distance in goal, made four saves and recorded the first shutout of her career. Lester and junior Megan McElroy (Acad. of Holy Cross/Silver Spring, MD) were both named to the all-tournament team.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (4-0): Sept. 11 at Albright; Sept. 13 at Washington (MO); Sept. 14-15 at Washington (MO) Invitational.
The Eagles took the team title at the Mercyhurst Invitational over the weekend, while head coach Larry Bock, who is in his 25th year at the helm, moved his career win total to 898. On Friday, Juniata came from behind to defeat California (Pa.), 28-30, 28-30, 30-24, 30-20, 15-4. Senior outside hitter Brandy Workinger (Dallastown/Dallastown), who was named the most valuable player of the tournament, had 25 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore opposite Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring), who was an all-tournament selection, tallied 18 kills, eight digs and six aces, while sophomore middle hitter Jill Davis (Worthington/Worthington, OH) posted nine kills and six blocks. Junior middle hitter Niki Mueller (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) had nine kills and three blocks. Freshman setter Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton) passed out 58 assists, while totaling 18 digs, three aces and three kills. On Saturday, the Eagles took care of Indiana (Pa.), 30-23, 30-25, 30-16. Workinger had 21 kills on 42 swings and a .357 hitting percentage to go with 13 digs, two blocks and an ace. Hart had nine kills, five digs, two aces and a block, while Dale finished with 47 assists, 13 digs and four aces. In the final match of the weekend, Juniata downed Lock Haven, 30-22, 30-20, 30-24. Workinger once again paced the Eagles with 15 kills, a .364 hitting percentage, seven digs and two blocks. Hart added in 13 kills, a .433 hitting percentage, eight digs, two aces and two rejections. Dale had 40 assists, 11 digs and two aces.

FIELD HOCKEY (0-4): Sept. 12, Susquehanna; Sept. 16 at Elmira.
The Eagles suffered a pair of losses during the past week, including a 5-0 loss to defending NCAA Division II champion Lock Haven in Huntingdon on Wednesday. The Bald Eagles owned a 2-0 advantage at halftime and out shot the blue and gold low-stickers, 36-3. Freshman goalie Melonie Sappe' (Dallas/Shavertown) had a personal-best 24 saves on the day. On Saturday, the Eagles got on the scoreboard for the first time in 2001, but suffered their second overtime loss of the year, 3-2, at Washington (Md.). The Shorewomen scored off a penalty corner with 3:54 left in the first session of sudden victory to secure the win. Juniata had battled back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime with two second-half tallies. Freshman Billie Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jean Silvey (Red Lion/Airville) with 34:13 to go in the second stanza to get Juniata on the board. Senior midfield/forward Kim Kelly (Upper Merion/King of Prussia) tied the contest with an unassisted goal at the 4:25 mark. Sappe' went the distance and made 16 stops for the Eagles.

MEN'S SOCCER (0-2-1): Sept. 13, LaRoche; Sept. 15, Lebanon Valley.
Juniata began the week with a 1-0 loss at York (Pa.) on Wednesday. The host Spartans scored just over 20 minutes into the contest and made the tally stand up the rest of the way. Senior goalkeeper Chris Zimmerman (Westmont Hilltop/Johnstown) made one save during an outing in which the Eagles out shot York, 7-4. On Sunday, the Eagles lost their second straight game by a 1-0 count when the fell short at Pitt-Johnstown. The Mountaincats tallied the contest-clincher with 4:45 remaining in the outing. Juniata out shot its host, 10-5. Zimmerman made three saves on the day.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Sept. 15, Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State.
Juniata journeyed to Lebanon Valley for a highly-competitive invitational on Saturday. The Eagle women placed 11th out of the 18 teams in attendance with 307 points. Dickinson and The College of New Jersey tied for team honors in women's race with 30 points each. The Eagles were paced by sophomore Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown), who took 52nd in a field of 219 with a time of (21:49.69). Junior Michele Palmer (Littlestown/Littlestown) took 67th (22:05. 13), while freshman Breanna Daum (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg) placed 83rd (22:31.77). Rounding out the top five for Juniata were sophomore Julianna Hillegass (Shanksville Stonycreek/Berlin), who was 145th (24:35.57) and sophomore Linda Maus (Woodland Hills/Pittsburgh), who was 146th (24:36.28). The winning time of 19:39.25 was turned in by Dickinson's Alex Forte.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (0-2): Sept. 15, Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State.
Juniata men took 14th in a field of 17 squads and tallied 362 markers at the Lebanon Valley Invitational on Saturday morning. The College of New Jersey ran away with the men's team title with just 19 points. Juniata's freshman Jason Freeman (Thorton/Thorton, CO) led the blue and gold at Lebanon Valley with a time of 29:43.05 to place 65th at an event that consisted of 204 participants. Feshman Justin Norris (Warren/Warren) was 83rd (30:11.50), while freshman Will Cantara (West Branch/Allport) took 85th (30:12.93). Freshman Chris Thompson (Topeka West/Topeka, KS), who was 133rd (32:34.26), and senior David Slat (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg), who was 136th (32:47.71), completed the scoring five for the Eagles. Eamon O'Brien of The College of New Jersey won the race with a clocking of 26:51.08
