Juniata 3, Messiah 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? For the third time this season the Juniata College women?s volleyball team responded to a loss with a 3-0 victory. This time the Eagles dispatched Commonwealth Conference foe Messiah 30-17, 30-19 and 30-17 in Huntingdon Wednesday night. Juniata improved its record to 18-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win, while the Falcons fell to 5-13 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.

The Falcons hung with Juniata early in game one before the Eagles began to pull away. A run of three-straight points, capped by an ace from Katie Laucks (West York/York) made the score 13-7 in favor of Juniata. Then with the score 19-11, the Eagles ran off five-straight points, highlighted by two aces from Abby Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) to put the match away. Erin Wisor (Altoona/Altoona) sealed the win with a kill.

Another big run was the difference in game two. With the score tied at 12, Juniata scored six of the next seven points, extending the lead to 18-13 and forcing a timeout. Lindsey Habel (Glen Oaks/Canton, Ohio) then posted a pair of kills down the stretch as Messiah got no closer than three the rest of the way.

Strong play from Kelly Kennedy of Messiah early in game three saw the Falcons tie the match at five. Juniata then rolled from there, pulling out to a 16-10 lead with a kill from Rachael Schatz (West Perry/Elliotsburg). Habel and Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) each had finishes down the stretch, and an emphatic kill from Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md.) sealed the match.

Three Eagles finished the match with a team-high seven kills. Laucks, Habel and Wisor each notched seven finishes while Kines, Schatz and Charles each had six. Setter Carli Dale finished with 38 assists and 1o digs. Kines and Charles reach recorded three blocks to pace the Eagle defense, with Kelly Popernik (Bartlett/Bartlett, Il.) leading the team with 14 digs. Six different Eagles had two aces in the match.

Juniata will be out of action until next Tuesday when the Eagles travel to play conference foe Elizabethtown.
