Huntingdon, PA - Juniata College senior goalkeeper Melonie Sappe' (Dallas/Shavertown) has been named the Commonwealth Conference goalkeeper/defensive field hockey player of the week for the week ending September 26th. This marks the second time this season she has been honored by the conference with this award.

Sappe' helped Juniata to a 1-1 week as she earned her second shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over conference foe Widener. The senior keeper stopped six shots in 70 minutes to lead Juniata to the win. Earlier in the week Sappe' notched a solid performance against conference foe Messiah. She turned away seven shots in limiting the Falcons to just one goal, well below their season average of three goals per game. With a total of thirteen saves in 140 minutes, Sappe' posted a 0.50 goals against average and a .929 save percentage for the week while compiling 13 saves.

Sappe' has surrendered just three goals in 487 minutes in the goal during the 2004 season. Her play this past week improved her goals against average to 0.43 for the year and she brought her save percentage up to 0.93 on the year. Overall, the senior has made 40 saves for an average of 5.71 saves per match.

Juniata opened the 2004 season with a five-game winning streak, and have improved the team record to 6-1 through its first seven games. The winning streak of five matches tied the program record for longest winning streak in a season, matching the teams from 1988 and 1989 which also enjoyed five-game streaks. Juniata will be back in action on Saturday Oct. 2 when the Eagles travel to play conference rival Lebanon Valley.
