with one another on the Program of Emphasis and the new curriculum the College launched

it mean to have graduated from a liberal arts college such as Juniata? Join together
to reflect on the past and how the College has affected generations of students.

A New Measure: The Revolutionary Modern Metric System
Bill Phillips ’70, Ph.D.
Location TBA
In ancient times the unit of length was often tied to the dimensions of the human
body—a convenient but inconsistent way to define lengths like a “foot” or “hand”.
More stable definitions (the king’s foot, the pharaoh's forearm,…) led to physical
artifacts like fathom-long bars cemented into the wall of the town square. The French
Revolution brought a new unit, the “meter”, defined in terms of the size of the earth,
but soon replaced by another artifact. Eventually, the countries of the world (including,
amazingly, the United States) accepted the platinum-iridium International Prototype
Meter and International Prototype Kilogram as their standards of length and mass.
But the needs of increasingly demanding technology made even these precious-metal
standards obsolete. Recently, in the most revolutionary change since the French Revolution,
our standards of measurement were redefined by fixing the values of constants of nature.
This talk will describe how this is done, why it was needed, and how it relates to
the historical evolution of measurement standards.
