HUNTINGDON, Pa.– A new exhibition at the Juniata College Museum of Art (JCMA), “Field Trip,” features works by Ann Tarantino that chart the experience of place and the relationship between the natural world and the built environment. The exhibition opens with a reception at 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2025, with comments by the artist at 5:30 p.m.
“The title, ‘Field Trip,’ is a play on words, considering the academic setting and the theme of moving through a field of space,” Tarantino said. “I hope people will walk away feeling that elements of the show are familiar or find a sense of belonging in the work.”
“Field Trip” will open alongside “Landscapes as Views,” a counterpoint exhibition of landscape selections by artists across time and place from the JCMA collection.
“I’m excited about a simultaneous show of traditional landscape paintings. It’s interesting to consider different ways of approaching similar subject matter.” said Tarantino.
Exhibited works include fixed paintings, cyanotypes, and a mural created on-site specifically for “Field Trip.” Tarantino combines digital mark-making tools with stencils, printing, airbrush, painting, and drawing. The pieces are varied in mediums and presentation and unified in interpreting place and abstract landscapes.
“I work with shapes and forms drawn from the landscape–that can be more traditional flora or fauna, or cast shadows from the built environment, like buildings and structures,” said Tarantino. “The motifs are joined together in each piece, rooted in experience, sight, and the landscape.”
Tarantino’s residency at the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils, Latvia, inspired six paintings on display. The artist found the contrast between post-Soviet Eastern European architecture and the museum’s medieval surroundings of particular interest.
Tarantino’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, with public art installations appearing in settings ranging from museums and galleries to botanical gardens and city streets.
“Field Trip” will be on view at the JCMA through April 12, 2025. JCMA is free and open to the public from 1-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
