Juniata College Honors Five Graduates with Alumni Achievement Awards

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College, as part of its "Alumni Weekend 2015," presented five alumni-related awards Saturday, June 6, during Alumni Assembly.
Englewood, Colo. resident Mary White, president and chief executive officer of Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, was awarded the Alumni Achievement Award; North Wales, Pa. resident Ronald Seiler, an independent pharmaceutical consultant, received the Harold B. Brumbaugh Alumni Service Award; La Mesa, Calif. resident Jonathan Hunter, a public health and housing consultant, received the William E. Swigart Jr. Alumni Humanitarian Award; Merion Station, Pa. resident Dr. Jeremy Souder, patient safety officer at Pennsylvania Hospital, was awarded the Young Alumni Achievement Award; and Huntingdon resident Dr. Jessie Mosley, chief of medicine at J.C. Blair Hospital in Huntingdon, received the Health Professions Alumni Appreciation Award.
Mary White, a native of Bellefonte, Pa., has been president and chief executive officer of Swedish Medical Center, a large community hospital serving the Denver, Colo. community, since 1996. As CEO, she oversees 1,200 medical personnel and 2,000 employees. She also steered the hospital through a significant transition from not-for-profit status to becoming part of Hospital Corporation of America. The facility has been recognized as a Top 100 hospital in the Solucient national poll and a Top 50 hospital in respiratory care by U.S. News & World Report.
She has helped develop the hospital's expansion and certification in a variety of primary care areas and medical sub-specialties, including a telemedicine program for strokes that serves 50 hospitsal sites in a five-state region.
She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Juniata in 1973 and went on to earn a master's degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh.
White has worked her entire career in the healthcare industry, starting in 1974 as a medical technologist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She moved to Denver in 1976 to work as a medical technologist at Presbyterian Medical Center until 1978. She moved into hospital administrative duties in 1980 when she joined Rose Health Care Systems as an administrative resident. She became assistant to the resident in 1981 and was promoted to director of planning in 1986. She was vice president for facility planning and development at Rose Medical Center from 1989 to 1991 and was senior vice president and chief operating officer at the center from 1991 to 1996.
She is active in her professional community. She is a Fellow in the American College of Health Care Executives and was a member of the AHA Metropolitan Hospital Governing Council. She currently serves on more than four boards of directors of Colorado not-for-profit organizations and also serves as a board member for CoBiz Financial, a Colorado Bank corporation.
She has worked tirelessly for Juniata, serving on the college's board of trustees since 1996. She was a member of the National Alumni Association from 1991 to 1994, and worked as a class fund agent and volunteered to raise funds for the Science Campaign in Juniata's Uncommon Outcomes capital campaign.
Ronald Seiler is a 1977 Juniata College graduate, earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry, mathematics and secondary education. He went on to earn a master's degree in 1982 in physical science from West Chester University.
A native of Warrington Township, Pa., Seiler most recently worked as a Janssen Pharmaceuticals consultant. Previously he worked as a associate director of learning and development at Merck Polytechnic Institute within Merck Research Labs in North Wales, Pa. Seiler started his career at Merck in 2001, starting as a manager of end-user documentation and managing learning technology and training from 2005 to 2008.
From 2008 to 2011, he worked as a project manager in the project and pipeline management department. He was associate director from 2011 to 2013. He also worked as a technical writer at Kelly Scientific Resources Inc., in Blue Bell, Pa., from 1999 to 2001.
Seiler started his career in 1977 as a teacher, teaching chemistry at North Penn High School until 1984. From 1984 to 1999, he owned and operated Computer and Office Training, a computer training school in Lansdale, Pa.. During that time he also worked as a computer instructor at Montgomery County Community College from 1984 to 1986 and at Temple University from 1984 to 1996.
Seiler has been an extraordinarily active volunteer for Juniata, working as co-chair of the Juniata Scholarship Fund from 2012 to 2015 and as alumni representative to the college's board of trustees from 2010 to 2013. He also served on the Alumni Council from 1993 to 1998 and 2010 to 2013. He volunteers for the Juniata Career Team and is a Juniata Alumni Ambassador. In addition, he was president of the Alumni Association for 1996-1997 and served on the Delaware Valley Alumni Leadership Team from 2009 to 2015.
Seiler is a member of the Kiwanis Club of Lansdale, serving as president from 2003 to 2004, and as a member of the board of directors from 1979 to 1984 and 1993 to 1996.
Jonathan Hunter, a native of the state of Washington, is a 1972 graduate of Juniata, earning a bachelor's degree in political science. He went on to earn a master's of divinity degree from Bethany Theological Seminary in 1977. He worked as a minister in the Church of the Brethren from 1977 to 1987, serving congregations in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Hunter currently works as an independent consultant providing planning and training designed to get health and housing organizations to meet the needs of the homeless and high-cost users of public crisis systems.
Before becoming a consultant, Hunter worked for 13 years for the Corporation for Supportive Housing in southern California. He started in 2000 as program manager of the agency's California program and became the program's director in 2004. During that time he designed and started an initiative to end homelessness for individuals with mental illness in Los Angeles County and led an initiative to connect the homeless, who are frequent users of crisis care, to health care providers.
In 2008 he was promoted to managing director for the agency's western region, which included offices in Texas, Arizona and California, until he stepped down in 2014.
Hunter started his work with the homeless in 1987 as director of the Friend-to-Friend Clubhouse, run by Episcopal Community Services. He was named director of transition programs in San Diego for Episcopal Community Services in 1989 and became assistant chief administrative officer for programs in 1991. In 1993 he was named executive vice president and chief operating officer for Episcopal Community Services, one of the largest social services agency in southern California.
He recently stepped down as a member of the board of directors for Housing California and served as the board's president for three years. In 2011, Hunter received the Tom McGuiness Community Leadership Award from Housing Works. He also received the 2013 William F. McKenna Award from LINC Housing. He also has been a volunteer for the Juniata Career Team.
Dr. Jeremy Souder is a native of Sellersville, Pa., and is a 2000 graduate of Juniata, earning a bachelor's degree in politics and health. He went on to earn his medical degree in 2005 from the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in both internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine. He served his residency in internal medicine from 2005 to 2008 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Souder has remained with Penn Medicine since then, and is currently a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Penn's School of Medicine. Since 2010 he has served as Pennsylvania Hospital's patient safety officer and as a hospitalist, and most recently he was named medical director of the Inpatient Palliative Care Program at Pennsylvania Hospital, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He has also been Pennsylvania Hospital's lead physician for Schwartz Center Rounds for Compassionate Healthcare since 2011.
Souder received the Patient Advocacy Award from Pennsylvania Hospital in 2011 and in 2012 was one of the recipients of the Quality and Patient Safety Award for Operations from the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He serves on multiple hospital and health system committees for quality and safety, medical informatics, and palliative care.
He is a fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Association for Physician Leadership, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
He has remained active as a volunteer for Juniata, working on the Juniata Career team from 2005 to 2009 and as a member of the Health Professions Affinity Group.
The Health Professions Alumni Appreciation Award was given to Dr. Jessie L. Mosley, a 2002 graduate of Juniata College and chief of the medicine department at J.C. Blair Hospital, in Huntingdon, Pa.,, since 2014.
Dr. Mosley, a native of Denville, N.J. who moved to Bedford, Pa. in 1993, earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Juniata and went on to earn her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006.
She served as an intern and resident from 2006 to 2009 at Altoona Family Physicians of the Altoona Regional Health System, acting as chief resident at the practice from 2008 to 2009.
Mosley started her medical practice career as a staff physician in 2009 at Broad Top Area Medical Center in Broad Top City, Pa., serving the community until 2013. Dr. Mosley became a staff physician at Huntingdon Family Care Center, which is part of J.C. Blair Medical Services, in 2013 and continues to practice there in addition to her duties as chief of medicine.
She is board certified in osteopathic medicine.
Mosley holds professional memberships in the American Osteopathic Association, the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
