HUNTINGDON, Pa. — The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Juniata College will host the 2025 Reeves Lecturer, Dr. Jerry Atwood, an international leader in supramolecular chemistry and Curator’s Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Missouri-Columbia, who will present a series of three lectures March 5-7.
As part of the John P. Reeves Lectureship in Chemistry, Dr. Atwood will deliver “Supramolecular Chemistry” at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, in Alumni Hall, Brumbaugh Academic Center; “Physical Methods in Chemistry,” at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, in Sill Boardroom, von Liebig Center for Science; and “Nanocapsules,” at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 7, in Neff Lecture Hall, von Liebig Center for Science. All are free and open to the public.
Atwood’s research has been foundational in developing this field of study. Supramolecular chemistry refers to a highly interdisciplinary field of study, which cuts across all of the traditional areas of chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry. In 1996, Atwood co-authored Comprehensive Supramolecular Chemistry, a 12-volume work summarizing the development of the field that spanned more than 10,000 pages. Subsequent works include the textbook, Supramolecular Chemistry, published originally in 2000, with a third edition published in 2021.
Atwood is the author of more than 600 scientific publications. His research interests revolve around a number of themes in supramolecular chemistry, including gas storage and separation and the control of confined spaces.
During his visit to Juniata, Atwood will also meet with faculty and students in formal and informal settings to share his reflections on his illustrious career in research chemistry.
Dedicated in memory of John P. Reeves ’64, the John P. Reeves Distinguished Lectureship in Chemistry was established in 2014 through a generous gift by Dr. Tom Werner ’64 and Mary Beaver Werner ’65 with additional funding from the Reeves family.
