HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College junior Caley McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District College Division Softball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

McCool, who is studying communications and public relations at Juniata, was named to the District II First team. As a First team honoree, she now becomes a candidate for the Academic All-America squad, which will be announced on May 26. McCool is Juniata's fourth selection in 2009-10 to an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad, and second First team honoree joining men's basketball senior Jeff Berkey.

McCool, a second baseman, enters this weekend's Landmark Conference Tournament with a .410 batting average. She is currently fifth in the Landmark in batting average while tied for fifth in total hits (43), and ranks fourth in on base percentage (.456). In the field, she has a .971 fielding percentage this season, committing just four errors in 136 chances with a mere eight errors over three seasons as Juniata's starter at second.

McCool earned Second team All-Landmark Conference honors last season as a sophomore, and has started 110 of Juniata's 111 games played during her career.

Academically, McCool is a five-time Dean's List student, and was named to the 2009 Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll. She is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the communications honor society, and is a recipient of Juniata's Calvert Ellis Scholarship. McCool finished second in Juniata's 2009 Bailey Oratorical contest, and campus-wide public speaking competition, and was a finalist in 2010.

Juniata (19-16, 6-6 Landmark) opens play in the double-elimination Landmark Conference Tournament on Friday, May 7, at 11:00 a.m., when the Eagles face the host squad from Moravian College.

To be eligible for the Academic All-District squad, nominees must have at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.00 scale, have played in at least 50 percent of their team's games at the position for which they've been nominated, and must have at least sophomore athletic eligibility. The College Division includes student-athletes at the NCAA Division II and III levels, and District II includes all institutions from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, and Maryland. The Academic All-District teams are selected by voting of all CoSIDA members in each district, while the Academic All-America squad is selected by a national committee.
