Juniata 5, Lycoming 2

Huntingdon, Pa.? After having its season-best five-match winning streak snapped in its last outing, the Juniata College men?s tennis team responded by posting a decisive 5-2 victory over non-conference foe Lycoming in Huntingdon Tuesday afternoon. The win improved Juniata to 6-2 on the season, while the visitors fell to 1-4.

Juniata opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. Jonathan Cohen (Highland Regional/Hollywood, Fla.) and Brian Sykes (Gateway Regional/Woodburry Heights, N.J.) claimed a hard-fought 9-8 win at the second doubles spot while Tom Nelson (State College/State College) and Romain Plessis (Catholic University of Lille/Lyon, France) also battled to a 9-7 win at the third doubles spot. Brandon Long (Lebanon/Lebanon) and David Bullock (Central Bucks East/Jamison) had an easier time with an 8-2 triumph at the first doubles spot.

Juniata then took control of the match by winning four of the six singles matches. The Eagles posted singles win at the third-through-sixth singles spots. Nelson had the toughest time of the victorious singles players, as he was extended to a third set before posting a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win at the fifth singles spot. Bullock eased to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at third singles. Cohen was a winner at the fourth position by a score of 6-4, 6-0 and Plessis rounded out the wins with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at the sixth singles spot. Long nearly claimed a win at the top singles spot, but fell in a marathon 2-6, 7-5, 10-8 match.

Juniata returns to action on Thursday, when the Eagles will host Messiah for a Commonwealth Conference match.
