HUNTINGDON, Pa.—The Juniata College Liberal Arts Symposium (LAS), an academic tradition for students to share their research and scholarship, will be held from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at locations throughout campus.

Known as “Mountain Day of the Mind,” a reference to a revered fall campus tradition, LAS was established in 2006 to provide a forum for students to present their work created in the classroom, laboratory, field, community, or studio. A free event, LAS provides the community with a unique opportunity to meet students and experience their learning.

“LAS is a wonderful moment for many students and members of the campus community to gather and celebrate their research and accomplishments,” said Acting President and Provost Lauren Bowen.

Beginning at 8 a.m., student presentations will take place in various locations within the Brumbaugh Academic Center, Good Hall, and Statton Learning Commons beginning at 8 a.m. and span a range of mediums and disciplines. Topics include “Kefir Treatment in a Parkinson’s Disease Model of a Drosophila Melanogaster,” “Volcanic Fingerprints of the Andes: Helium, Neon, and Carbon,” “From Mourning to Meaning: A Walk Through Victorian Influence on Death and Memento Mori,” and “The Fantastic Four: Family Life in the 1960s.”

Special sessions begin at 10 a.m. with a presentation of communication research projects, followed by a keynote address, “If you throw that one more time, you’ll have to go sit with the grownups,” by Jack Barlow, Charles A. Dana Professor of Politics, at 11:15 a.m. in Alumni Hall (A100), Brumbaugh Academic Center.

Starting at 2 p.m., research poster presentations will be on display at the Statton Learning Commons. There will also be a special performance by the Screaming Eagles Pep Band at 4 p.m. on Detwiler Plaza, adjacent to Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center.

All-day events include the Senior Capstone Exhibition and Senior Arts Capstone Exhibition at the Juniata College Museum of Art. Integrated Media Arts students will be showing their work online in a virtual exhibition.
