Juniata 81, Mitchell 57

LANCASTER, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s basketball team evened its record at .500 and snapped a four-game losing streak in convincing fashion with an 81-57 victory over Mitchell College in the consolation game of the 2006 Rotary Tip-Off The New Year Tournament in Lancaster Tuesday evening. Juniata improved to 6-6 with the victory

The Eagles got 18 points from Chris Jasiota (Oil City/Oil City) 14 of which came as the Eagles built a 12-point first-half lead. The junior center was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in the first half as Juniata shot 47-percent from the field. Meanwhile Juniata?s defense held Mitchell to just nine field goals in the first 20 minutes to take a 37-25 lead into halftime.

Juniata?s offense was even more efficient in the second half as the team shot 50-percent from the field en route to scoring 44 points to earn the 24-point win. Brent Ferko (Freeport/Sarver) came off the bench and scored nine of his 12 points in the second half, and was one of five Eagles with at least seven points.

Juniata?s defense forced 22 Mitchell turnovers, while limiting the opponent to just 32-percent shooting from the field. The 57 points Mitchell scored was the second-lowest total allowed by the Eagles this season.

Nick Hager (Franklin/Franklin) added nine points for Juniata offensively, while Neil Holloway (Tussey Mountain/Saxton) led the team with seven rebounds. Tommy McConnell (Bishop Guilfoyle/Hollidaysburg) finished with a team-high five assists.

Mitchell?s Daniel Bastine led all players with 18 points in the game while James Dunleavy and Jamal Foster chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively. Foster also led all players with eight rebounds and David Andrade passed out five assists for Mitchell which fell to 1-10 with the loss.

Juniata will play its final non-conference game of the season on Thursday as the Eagles host Case Western Reserve University.
