Area of Concentration (4 courses = 12 credits) [48 credits with 15 at 300 level]:
A student must select an area of concentration in one of the three disciplines (for example, in Politics). To do so, a student needs to take 4 additional courses from the department chosen. This might include independent study, but would not include internships. Among the 4 courses, 2 must be at the 300 level or above, and where appropriate 1 course must be formal or quantitative study generally required for POE in the area (such as logic for philosophy).
An introduction to the program and its component fields, with an emphasis on their complementary character. This course will carry the designation PPE 200, and will be pass/fail. Members from each department will contribute to the course, although it will not be formally team-taught.
Senior Research
Project/Capstone Seminar (one semester, 3 credits) [52 credits with 18 at 300 level] The project should be interdisciplinary across at least two of the three disciplines, focusing on the student’s chosen area of concentration. The research project is conducted under faculty guidance and should be presentable at NCUR or JC Research Symposium. Required for all PPE students. The course will carry the designation PPE 480.
Related Fields (4 courses = 12 credits)
Students, with faculty guidance, select 4 courses (at least 1 300-level or above) in related fields (e.g., but not limited to, psychology, history, international studies, sociology, religion, foreign language courses in the 3rd semester or later) that complement their program.
Study Abroad for PPE (not required, but strongly recommended)
Students in PPE would be urged to study abroad (both in general and for the sake of fleshing out JC’s course offerings) and to develop a language proficiency. The PPE committee will identify appropriate courses offered from other institutions which are equivalent to required JC courses.
Internship in PPE (not required, but recommended)
Faculty members will help a student obtain an internship in related areas. Internships for credit would not count toward the course/credit requirements of the POE.
In some instances, a student (in consultation with his or her advisor) may substitute a course.
