FOOTBALL (1-2, 1-2 MAC): Bye week.
*MAC Opponent.

Juniata dropped their second game of the season, despite a furious second half comeback that felt just short. The Eagles trailed 23-3 in the third quarter, but rallied to cut the deficit to 23-18 before an interception in the end zone on the final drive stalled the comeback. Craig Moshier (Coudersport/Coudersport) paced the offense by tying a school record with 40 carries for 185 yards and a touchdown. Juniata quarterback Greg Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) was 13-for-49 for 160 yards and a scoring pass. He also rushed for 50 yards on the afternoon. Anthony Lipple (Penn Cambria/Ashville) was the top receiver for Juniata grabbing five passes for 63 yards and his first career touchdown. John Boyer (Belleville/Indian Valley) caught four passes for 44 yards, while Moshier chipped in with 24 yards receiving.

Defensively, Steve Parsons (Blackhawk/Beaver Falls) led the team with 11 tackles while adding an interception and a pass break-up. Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Tyrone) was also in double figures in tackles with 10; he also broke-up a pass. Bryon Latterner (Penn Cambria/Gallitzin) notched ten tackles, four of them for a loss and recovered a fumble. Peter Thomas (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) had six stops for the blue and gold, four of two of them for a loss. Jesse Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) punted eight times for an average of 35.1 yards per punt. Daniel Heinlein (Bishop Carroll/Ebensburg) hit a 21-yard field goal and converted his one point-after attempt.

WOMEN?S SOCCER (2-5, 0-2 Commonwealth): Sept. 24 at Lycoming; Sept. 28 vs. Pitt-Bradford.

Juniata fell in their one outing of the week when they were topped 7-1 at conference opponent Widener. The Eagles got their lone goal from sophomore Nikki McLellan (Parkland/Hanover) scored on a penalty kick. The tally was her second of the season, giving her five points for the campaign. Lindsey Treon (Hollidaysburg/Duncansville) made seven stops in net for the Eagles. Treon has 32 saves on the season for the blue and gold.

FIELD HOCKEY (5-2, 1-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 25 vs. Messiah*; Sept. 27 at Widener*.
*Commonwealth Conference match.

The Juniata field hockey team picked up a pair of wins, including a 2-0 win in their conference opener at Albright. They also topped Philadelphia Biblical 3-2. Betsy Kusniez (Boyertown/Gilbertsville) notched the game winner against Philadelphia Biblical on an assist from Joanna Acri (East Pennsboro/Enola). Acri also notched a goal on an assist from Kusniez. Janine Hartman (Whitehall/Whitehall) had the other goal for Juniata. In the win over Albright, it was Kusniez scoring the game-winner off an assist from Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs). Billie Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) converted one of her eight shots for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Melonie Sappe? made four saves in the shutout against Albright, and had six saves in the win over Philadelphia Biblical.

WOMEN?S VOLLEYBALL (11-0, 1-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 24 vs. Lebanon Valley*;
Sept. 26-27 vs. Juniata Invitational. *Commonwealth Conference match.

Juniata earned four wins on the week including two wins over teams ranked in the top-five in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Juniata topped number four Washington University (Mo.) 3-0 and number two ranked Trinity University (Tx.) 3-1. The Eagles also earned wins over Baldwin-Wallace and conference foe Albright. Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) had a huge week for the Eagles piling up 59 kills with a .354 hitting percentage. She also added 48 digs, eight blocks and two aces. She notched a career high 27 kills and 20 digs in the win over Trinity. Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton) directed the Eagle attack with 167 assists over the week, and average of 15.8 assists per game. She also had 64 digs, 13 kills, three blocks and five aces. Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring) notched 48 kills for the week along with 22 digs. Katie Laucks (West York/York) knocked down 34 kills on the week, while recording six blocks and 13 digs. Lindsey Habel (Glen Oak/Canton, Ohio) had 21 digs along with 19 kills and six blocks. Melissa Berdine (Pine-Richland/Gibsonia) led the team with five aces on the week, while Jenn Habel (Glen Oak/Canton, Ohio) tied Charles for a team-best eight blocks. Juniata has opened their season for the first time since the 1998 season.

MEN?S AND WOMEN?S CROSS COUNTRY: Sept 27 at Penn State-Altoona Invitational.

The Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country team?s competed at the Roanoke Invitational on Saturday. The meet featured 10 teams on the women?s side, and eight squads running in the men?s race. The Eagle women ran to a second-place finish totaling 57 points as a team. The men raced to a third-place finish, coming home with 86 points.

For the women, Juniata placed their top five runners in the top-21. Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) was the top finisher for the blue and gold. Hayes placed 5th overall and came across the line in a time of 20:40.50. Right behind her in 6th place was Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) who finished with a time of 20:51.90. Lia Bella )Morris Catholic/Rockaway, N.J.) placed 13th for the blue and gold, and Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) was right behind her in 14th. Rounding out the top five for Juniata was Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) who placed 21st. Kimberly Anderson of Southern Virginia University was the overall winner with a time of 20:01.90. On the men?s side Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) paced the team with his 12th place finish. Sheaffer ran the course in a time of 29:09.0. Behind him was Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) who placed 14th overall. Will Cantara (West Branch/Wilburne) was also in the top 20 with his 17th place finish. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) and Jason Freeman (Thornton/Thornton, Co.) rounded out the top five as they placed 22nd and 23rd respectively.

WOMEN?S TENNIS (2-5, 1-3 MAC): Sept. 24 at Penn State-Altoona; Sept. 25at Elizabethtown*; Sept 27 at Waynesburg. *MAC Opponent.

Juniata captured their first two wins of the season, a 6-3 win over Penn State-Altoona and a 7-2 win over Widener. Liz Ward (Hollidaysburg/Holidaysburg) scored three singles victories on the week. Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) had a pair of singles victories as well as two doubles triumphs. Steph Shaver (Central Cambria/Ebensburg), Lindsey Dipaola (Cumberland Valley/Mechanicsburg) and Liz Ghebreselassie (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) earned one singles win on the week. Juniata was 5-4 on the week in doubles matches.

MEN?S SOCCER (2-6-1, 1-1 Commonwealth): Sept. 27 vs. King?s; Sept. 28 vs. Pitt-Bradford.

Juniata dropped a pair of matches on the week, one of them a conference contest at Widener. The Eagles led early at Widener on a goal from Kodi Hockenberry (Red Land/Lewisberry) assisted by Will Marshall (Upper Perkiomen/Pennsburg). Goalie Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) made seven saves in the game. Earlier in the week Guthridge made nine saves in an Eagle loss to Lycoming. Jeff Gehring (Exeter Township/Reading) had Juniata?s two shots in the outing against Lycoming.
