FOOTBALL (0-1, 0-0 MAC): Sept. 13 at Moravian*

The Juniata College football team opened their season with a tough 28-11 loss to Dickinson at Knox Stadium in Huntingdon. The Eagle offense was led by Craig Moshier (Coudersport/Coudersport) whose 101 yards rushing gives him five consecutive games with 100-plus rushing yards dating back to last season. He gained 101 yards on 29 carries, as the Eagles rushed for 144 yards on the game. They also passed for 178 yards as quarterback Greg Troutman (Meyersdale/Meyersdale) was 11-for-37 and threw one scoring pass. Jared Lucas (Upper Dauphin/Elizabethville) had the scoring catch and 35 yards receiving. Moshier also grabbed four passes for 17 yards. John Boyer (Indian Valley/Belleville) caught three passes for 52 yards on the game, while Phil Haas (Elizabethtown/Hummelstown) caught a 42-yard pass, the longest of the day for the Eagles. Defensively Peter Thomas (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) led the way with 15 tackles, three of them for a loss. Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Tyrone) and Bryon Latterner (Penn Cambria/Gallitzin) notched 14 and 13 tackles respectively. Frederick Wall (Big Spring/Newville) had nine tackles, three of them for loss for the Eagles. Steve Parsons (Black Hawk/Beaver Falls) notched nine tackles and forced a fumble, while Mike Brown (South Williamsport/South Williamsport) broke up two passes from his corner position.

WOMEN?S SOCCER (2-2, 0-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 10 at Seton Hill; Sept. 13 vs. Lebanon Valley*

After suffering an 8-0 defeat in the first round of the SUNY Fredonia Tournament, Juniata responded by posting a 7-0 win over Thiel College in the consolation match. Six different Eagles found the net in the win as Juniata peppered the goal with 43 shots. Niki McLellan (Parkland/Hanover) got Juniata rolling less than a minute into the contest as she notched a score on an assist from Alison Kampstra (Chambersburg/Chambersburg). It was the first goal of the season for McLellan who was an all-conference performer her freshman season. Erinn Harter (Penn Trafford/Trafford) and Jenn Hurley (Lyndonville Central/Newfield, N.Y.) continued the scoring for the Eagles in the first half. Kampstra also assisted on Harter?s score while Emily O?Donnell (Spring-Ford/Royersford) set up the Miller goal. Juniata would not slow down in the second half, in fact they sped up. The Eagles put away four chances in the final 45 minutes with three different players getting on the scoreboard. Amy Tyler (Altoona/Altoona) scored the final two goals for the blue and gold. Prior to that, Becky Davis (York/Carmel, Ca.) and Claire Dempsey (Manheim Township/Lancaster) put shots away in the first twelve minutes of the second half. O?Donnell and Dempsey assisted the first two scores in the second half, and Janine Smeltz (Line Mountain/Herndon) and Sarah Lester (Thomas Jefferson/Jefferson Hills) set up the final two tallies. Lindsey Treon (Hollidaysburg/Duncansville) had two saves while playing most of the contest in net. Amanda Rice (James Buchanan/Greencastle) entered the net for the final 16 minutes. Three Eagle players had five or more shots. The eight goals for Juniata are the second most they have scored in a game.

WOMEN?S FIELD HOCKEY (2-2, 0-0 Commonwealth): Sept. 18 at Philadelphia Biblical
A pair of one-goal matches for Juniata this week, and the Eagles won one, and lost one. Juniata came from behind to pull off a 2-1 victory over Indiana (Pa.) but then had the tables turned on them as Johns Hopkins (Md.) rallied to top them 2-1. Against Indiana, Dana Groff (Solanco/Quarryville) scored a goal in the second half to tie the match at one, and then Jean Silvey (Red Lion/Airville) took a pass from Groff and scored the game winner. Billie Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) assisted on Groff?s goal. Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) finished the match with six saves for the Eagles. Against Hopkins, the Eagles took a lead late in the second half when Silvey converted a penalty stroke, but Hopkins scored two late goals to take the win. Sappe? recorded seven saves in the loss.

Juniata earned a hard-fought tie in the consolation match of the SUNY Fredonia Tournament after dropping a pair of 4-1 matches during the week. Juniata tied Warner Southern (Fl.) 2-2 on the strength of a pair of goals from Jeff Gehring (Exeter Township/Reading). The goals were the first two of the season for Gehring and he was assisted on both scores by Rob Bowser (Dallastown/York). Tim Penrod (Moravia/Moravia, N.Y.) made six saves in net for the Eagles. In the first-round game against the host SUNY Fredonia, Juniata fell by a 4-1 score. Josh Cady (Malvern Prep./Frazer) scored his first career goal in the loss. Against Carngie Mellon, Bowser had the lone goal in the game for Juniata, he was assisted by Chris Fanelli (Norwich/McDonough, N.Y.).

MEN?S AND WOMEN?S CROSS COUNTRY: Sept. 13 at Western PA Championships.


The men?s and women?s cross country teams opened the season at a tri-meet at Gettysburg. On the men?s side, the Eagles finished third out of the three teams. Juniata?s Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) was the top finisher for the men?s unit with his time of 29:05, good for 22nd place. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) was 26th at 29:30 and Will Cantara (West Branch/Allport), Jeremy Lampert (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) and Jason Freeman (Thornton/Thornton, Co.) finished 30th, 31st and 32nd respectively. For the women, running in her first collegiate cross country meet, Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) was the top finisher for the blue and gold. Hayes placed 11th overall and came across the line in a time of 25:31. Right behind her in 12th place was freshman Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep./Baltimore, Md.) who finished the course in 25:39. Another freshman Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle) was third on the unit with a 18th-place finish and a time of 26:19. Stefanie Rynkewitz (Lewistown/Lewistown) was 21st overall in a time of 26:47 and Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) rounded out the top five with her 24th-place finish. Bay ran the course in a time of 27:00.

Juniata opened the season with a tough home loss to Lebanon Valley by a 7-0. Steph Shaver (Central Cambria/Ebensburg) came the closest to a win in her number two singles 6-6 (5), 6-3. Then Shaver and freshman Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) battled to a 9-7 loss in their number two doubles match. Liz Ward (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg), Jenna Taylor (Pequea Valley/Narvon) dropped their number three doubles match by a 8-6 score.
