Huntingdon, Pa. – A “Who’s Your Neighbor? Story Listening” panel will be held at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 31, in the Ellis Hall Ballroom. The event will feature a panel of Juniata community members, including: Jody Althouse, director of violence prevention; Tim Launtz, head football coach; Polly Walker, director of Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies; and Dan Welliver, associate professor of sociology. The event is free and open to the public.

“Who’s Your Neighbor? Story Telling” invites audiences to learn about experiences that differ from their own by listening to others. Panelists share revealing, reflective stories from many chapters of their lives, each of which focus on how they challenge and embrace their gender, race, class, ability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, ethnicity, and culture in their own lives and within their families. Each story gives listeners a deeper sense of their own diversity. This Beyond Tolerance event creates an opportunity to dialogue and gain a first or deeper connection with panelists.

“Juniata College challenges each of its students to ‘Think about who you are’ and the Who’s Your Neighbor series provides an opportunity for faculty and staff to model the process of reflection about who we are and what we bring to the campus community,” says Cynthia Merriwether-DeVries, an associate professor of sociology at Juniata who serves a central role in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

“Who’s Your Neighbor? Story Telling” is part of the larger, Beyond Tolerance series, the events of which are open to all members of both the Juniata and Huntingdon communities. Each event presents an opportunity to advance Juniata’s institutional goal of creating a campus community of inclusiveness from the classroom to the residence hall room to the conference room.
