HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Every fall the Juniata College Wind Symphony performs its fall concert inspired by some theme and this year it's brass, as the ensemble plays "Bugler's Holiday," along with some other classics at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus.

Tickets for adults are $5 and are available at the box office on the day of the concert. Current Juniata students with ID and children under age 18 are admitted free.

The concert opens with "Nitro," by Frank Ticheli, a renowned band composer who visited Juniata and directed the fall concert in 2008. "Nitro" is noted for its trumpet fanfares and chattering woodwinds in response. Ticheli, professor of composition at the University of Southern California, writes music for such orchestras as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony, the Detroit Symphony and the American Composers Orchestra.

The next selection is "Bugler's Holiday," by Leroy Anderson, a modern composer who debuted many of his pieces with the Boston Pops orchestra and alo wrote the classics "Sleigh Ride" and "Syncopated Clock."

Two brass trios will be featured on the song. The trumpets will be played by Katie Downey, a senior from Warren, Pa.; Melissa King, a senior from Newtown, Conn.; and Caroline White, a senior from Chambersburg, Pa. The low-brass trio will be comprised of Nathan Anderson-Stahl, a freshman from Camp Hill, Pa.; Joel Canner, a freshman from State College, Pa.; and Jared Flick, a freshman from Richfield, Pa.

The ensemble will then play "Slava," composed by Leonard Bernstein. In an lection year, the choice of this piece is appropriate because Bernstein subtiutled it "A Political Overture" and based the composition on the songs "Grand Old Party" and "Rehearse," songs from the failed musical "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."

The piece was written by the famed conductor Bernstein, for another maestro, Mstislav Rostopovich, then in his first year as conductor of Washington, D.C.'s National Symphony Orchestra.

The next selection will be, appropriate for the autumn, "The Leaves are Falling," by Warren Benson. Benson composed works for wind instruments and percussion and was a professor of music at Ithaca College and the Eastman School of Music.

The final selection will be a musical rendition of "Suite of Old American dances," by Robert Russell Bennett. The selection has five movements based on classic American dances: "Cakewalk," "Schottische," "Western One-step," Wallflower Waltz" and "Rag."
