Juniata College will offer two week-long, residential summer camps from July 14 through July 20 for gifted students in grades four through 10 to dive into activities and projects in the sciences, humanities, and the arts.

"Campers get an opportunity to share ideas with students who share similar interests and meet the instructors who are coordinating the camp's academic experiences," says Fay Glosenger, Martin G. Brumbaugh Professor of Education and camp director. "It's a great opportunity to study with experts who are excited about what they do. The activities also give younger students the experience of living and learning on a college campus."

Students are enrolled in one of two camp groups: New Visions is open to students who will be entering grades four through seven in fall 2002; Voyages is open to students who will be entering grades eight through 10 in fall 2002.

The camp fee is $425, which includes tuition, room and board, field trips and facilities fees. The deadline for applications is May 15. A non-refundable $200 deposit is due at the time of application. All fees must be paid by check or money order made payable to "Juniata College."

Each day, students in New Visions participate in two academic experiences and one recreational activity. Students in Voyages participate in one extended academic experience each day and one recreational activity later in the afternoon.

In this year's New Visions classes, students can choose from creating their own architectural project, writing a science fiction story, composing a musical piece using percussion and rhythmic instruments from around the world, creating a ceramic sculpture, or launching a hot-air balloon. Students in the Voyages camp can opt to study the communication skills necessary for dating, explore the geology, fossils and caves of central Pennsylvania, analyze the chemical composition of food, fine-art paintings and soap, or learn how to build a fountain from recycled materials. Recreational activities will include aquatics, swimming and tennis.

Courses and activities are designed to inspire special individual talents, expose campers to new ideas and approaches to learning, provide a residential environment that encourages interaction between individuals with similar interests and abilities, and offer a taste of the many opportunities available on Juniata's liberal arts campus.

Campers are housed in college residence halls and eat their meals at Ellis College Center. Courses are held in campus classrooms and laboratories, and students have access to the many educational, cultural and recreational facilities at Juniata College. College interns and administrative staff will supervise campers in the residence halls.

Camp instructors will include Juniata College faculty and certified teachers with expertise in each subject area.

Although enrollment in an enrichment program is not required, students who attend must demonstrate strong academic talent, a high level of motivation and sustained interest, age-appropriate social behavior, and the maturity to live and function in a residential program.
