HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College men's cross country team was just one point off the championship squad from Susquehanna at the 2007 Landmark Conference championship meet. Apparently the rest of the conference doesn't think they'll be any closer to the championship this time around.

The Eagles were picked to finish third in the league in 2008, according to a preseason poll of the league's head cross country coaches and sports information directors that was released Friday.

Juniata, which will host the Landmark Conference Cross Country Championship on November 1, 2008, tallied 55 points in the balloting. The Eagles trailed Susquehanna, which was picked to repeat as champions with 68 points, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy with 62 points.

The University of Scranton was fourth in the voting with 48 points, followed by Goucher College (36 points), Moravian College (27 points), Catholic University (26 points), and Drew University (14 points).

Juniata will be paced by First team All-Landmark Conference honoree Matt Bailey (East Petersburg, Pa./Hempfield). Sam Williams (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central), who finished ninth in the 2007 Landmark meet, also returns to the roster in 2008.

Juniata opens its 2008 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 30, when it takes part in the Duquesne Duals in Pittsburgh.
