HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College scored two runs in the first and third innings and went on to post a 4-2 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy, in the second game of the two schools' Landmark Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon, Pa. The victory allowed the Eagles to salvage a split out of the twinbill, after dropping the first game 2-1. Juniata's (14-13, 2-6 Landmark) Stacy Nagy (Millerton, Pa./Troy) singled home Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) for the first of the Eagles' two runs in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Nagy later scored on an error by Mariner second baseman Karen Taylor. The Eagles doubled up their score in the third, with Nagy again scoring Eckard from third on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Rachel Nagy (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) drove in Tara Carl (Duke Center, Pa./Otto-Eldred) later in the inning with a sac fly to left field. USMMA (9-16, 1-5 Landmark) scored its only run of the game in the second inning, when Marjorie Marino's sac fly to right field scored Kaitlyn Robbins, who reached on a single. Juniata starter Pam Mansell (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) scattered four hits and allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work, while improving her record to 5-5 with the win. Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) came on for Mansell in the seventh, striking out three of the four batters she faced to earn the save. In game one, the Mariners registered all their offense in the fourth inning, when Jess LaValley belted a two-run home run that also scored Jen Swanson. Juniata answered with a single run in the sixth, when Jackie Morley's (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) grounder to third was mishandled, allowing Rachel Nagy to score. Erb started in the circle for Juniata, striking out nine and yielding four hits in the losing effort. LaValley fanned 11 Eagle batters on her way to the complete game win. Juniata faces Messiah College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15, in Grantham, Pa. -30-
