MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Juniata College softball team opened its 2008 season with a pair of losses to Elizabethtown College and Villa Julie College, Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles (0-2) opened the day with a 5-2 loss to Elizabethtown College. Sophomore Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) pitched all seven innings for the Eagles (0-1), scattering five hits. Junior Liz Schmitt (Knoxville, Tenn./H. Frank Carey, N.Y.) stroked a pair of doubles, including a two-run double in the first that scored Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Tara Carl (Duke Center, Pa./Otto-Eldred). Eckard hit a pair of singles to aid the Juniata cause, while Carl and Stacy Nagy (Millerton, Pa./Troy) each had one single. Juniata concluded the day with a 5-3 loss to Villa Julie College. Rachel Nagy (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) went 3-for-4 with three singles, while Eckard went 2-for-4 with a double. Caley McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) also went 2-for-4. Junior righthander Pam Mansell (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) pitched four innings in her first start, with Erb coming on in relief in the fifth inning and taking the loss. Juniata will face Green Mountain College (Vt.) and Frederick (Md.) Community College in game on Tuesday. -30-
