Juniata 5, Washington & Jefferson 0 Washington, Pa. ? The Juniata College field hockey team could not have written a better script to kick off the 2006 season as the Eagles rode a high-scoring offense and a stingy defense to a 5-0 victory over Washington & Jefferson Friday afternoon in Washington. Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) got her season off to a flying start as she scored three goals and assisted on another as Juniata knocked home four goals in the second half to turn the tight match into a lopsided affair. It was Wagner who notched Juniata?s first goal of the season as she gathered a pass from Leslie Stern (Red Lion/Felton) and found the back of the cage just 10 minutes into the contest. Heather Hassinger (Middleburg/Middleburg) also registered an assist on the goal. The teams were nearly even in the shot department over the rest of the first half as Juniata keeper Abby Funk (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) turned away three shots, and Presidents goalie Ashley Rudd made a pair of saves to keep Juniata?s lead at one. But that lead would quickly grow as Juniata came out attacking in the second half. Less than 10 minutes into the second period Wagner struck for her second goal of the match, putting Juniata up 2-0. Michelle Campbell (Northern Lebanon/Annville) followed less than three minutes later, converting a Meredith Low (Sun Valley/Aston) pass to give Juniata 3-0 cushion. Low was in on the assist again five minutes later as she found Wagner who knocked in her third goal of the season to give Juniata the 4-0 edge. The scoring came to a close 54 minutes into the action as Low and Wagner hooked up again, this time with Low getting the goal and Wagner earning the assist. Juniata out-shot the home team 12-1 in the second half, earning a 17-7 edge in shots for the game. Funk finished with three saves to earn her shutout, while Rudd made eight stops in goal for Washington & Jefferson. Juniata returns to action on Sunday when the Eagles take on Castleton State as part of a tournament hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology. ###
