CALIFORNIA, Pa. ? The Juniata College women?s swimming team kicked off its second-semester schedule with one of the toughest opponents on its schedule. And despite a strong overall effort the Eagles fell to 21st-ranked Division II California University (Pa.) 143-102 in dual-meet action Saturday afternoon.

It was another solid effort for Amy Sutherland (Norwich/Norwich, N.Y.) as she claimed two first-place and a second-place finish on the day. Kristin Musselman (Central Columbia/Bloomsburg) matched Sutherland with one first and one second-place finish.

Sutherland touched the wall first in both the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM and added a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Her top finish paced Juniata to a first, second and third-place sweep in the 200 IM. Carlie Zoubek (Paul IV/Burke, Va.) placed second, while Kim Dierolf placed third.

Musselman was the victor in the 100 butterfly and added a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle. Kasey Brough (Carlisle/Gardners) was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly, providing the Eagles with four points.

Also claiming a second-place finish on the day was Jenny Bair (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) who finished second in the 200 breaststroke. Zoubek placed third in the event giving the Eagles another three points.

Brough added two additional third-place finishes in the 1,000 freestyle and 200 butterfly. Amy Hanson (Lancaster Catholic/Elizabethtown) earned a third-place effort in the 100 freestyle, while Collin Thompson (Altoona/Altoona) was third in the 500 freestyle.

Juniata capped the day by winning the 200 freestyle relay as Musselman, Hanson, Bair and Thompson touched the wall in a time of 1:50.53 to earn the victory.

Juniata returns to action on Wednesday with a dual meet against conference foe Susquehanna.
