Juniata 3, D?Youville 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s volleyball team opened both its home and Division III schedule in triumphant fashion as the Eagles earned a 3-0 victory over D?Youville College in Huntingdon Friday night. The Eagles improved to 2-2 with the win, while the Spartans fell to 0-4 with the loss.

Juniata held the top spot in the most recent CSTV/AVCA Division III Coaches Poll and claimed its first win over a Division III foe of the season by game scores of 30-28, 30-18 and 30-28.

Game one remained tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than three points. Juniata rallied from an early deficit, moving in front 8-7 after a kill from Glenn DeHaven (Walt Whitman/South Huntington, N.Y.). Juniata remained in front until the Spartans tied the score at 21 after a Juniata error. A pair of kills from Nick Bernardo (Christopher Dock/Lansdale) and one finish from Cordt Withum (Penn Manor/Holtwood) was Juniata?s answer as the Eagles went in front 27-24 then hung on for the 30-28 victory.

Juniata climbed in front early in game two and never trailed. Matt Fritz (John Carroll/Churchville, Md.) tossed in a serve ace to put Juniata up 16-10 midway through the game. A pair of Jeremy Barndt (Souderton/Souderton) kills and a double block from Barndt and Ziegler helped Juniata close the game on a 7-0 run and earn the 30-17 game-two win.

Juniata took control of game three with an 8-0 run that took the score from 6-5 in favor of D?Youville to 13-7 Eagles. Robb Patty (Greater Latrobe/Latrobe) had a pair of kills and a block in the spurt that put Juniata in front for good. The Spartans closed to within two at 27-25 after a kill from John Colosi, but another finish from Patty gave Juniata a 29-27 edge, with a kill from Ryan McGinley (Pennridge/Perkasie) closing the match.

DeHaven finished with a team-high 12 kills, while Matt Springer (William Allen/Allentown) came off the bench to record 10 kills in just two games. Tim Cole (Pennsbury/Yardley) brought up 11 digs for Juniata, while Fritz finished with three blocks to lead Juniata?s defense at the net.

Colosi and Clinton Gilliland both had seven kills to pace the D?Youville offense. Aaron Miller finished with seven digs and three blocks, while Chris Heftka also added three blocks.

Juniata returns to action tomorrow night as the Eagles host EIVA Tait Division foe Rutgers-Newark for the team?s first conference match of the season.
