Lycoming 64, Juniata 61

Williamsport, Pa. ? Kristen Kirk (Newport/Newport) scored her 20th point with 2:46 left in the game to give Juniata College a one-point lead, but Lycoming College would score the final four points of the game as the Eagles dropped a tight 64-61 decision in Williamsport Wednesday evening. Juniata fell to 2-4 with the loss, while the Warriors are now 2-5.

Lycoming took its first lead of the second half on a bucket from Mindy Culp with 3:08 remaining. Kirk answered at 2:46 off an assist by Mindy Wernder (West York/York) to put Juniata back in front 61-60. But Juniata went cold from the field the rest of the way as Juniata missed a paid of shots on its next possession. After Stacy Lindeman put the Warriors in front by one, the Eagles had a pair of turnovers in the final minute to lose a chance at tying.

The final minutes overshadowed a strong all-around effort from Juniata, in which the Eagles overcame an early deficit to take the lead mid-way through the first half. A basket from Jess Winemiller (Dallastown/York) gave Juniata a seven-point lead in the first half, and then saw the lead expand to eight after a three from Kirk.

It was more of the same in the second half for Juniata. Though the lead never reached double figures, Juniata was able to keep the home team at bay until the final minutes. Lycoming moved within three points of the Juniata lead nine times in the second half, and got within one on three occasions, before finally pulling back in front.

Juniata had two players join Kirk in double figures as Winemiller finished with 14 points and Katie O?Brien (South Western/Hanover) also added 14. O?Brien recorded her second ?double-double? of the season as she also grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Winemiller added five steals for Juniata, while Kirk paced the team with four assists.

Juniata shot a solid 42-percent from the field for the game, but turned the ball over 28 times.

Lindeman scored a team-high 14 for Lycoming, with Culp adding 13 and Danielle Kern pitching in with 10. Kern also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Culp and Rebecca Pugh each had four assists.

Juniata will return home on Saturday as the Eagles will welcome The Apprentice School.
