University Park, Pa. ? Competing against some of the top Division I teams in the region, the Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country teams ran to solid finishes at the Penn State University Invitational in University Park Saturday morning. The Eagle women placed 39th out of 41 primarily Division I institutions, while the Juniata men placed 37th of 38 teams. The Juniata women finished with 1170 points as a team while the men scored 1058.

MEN?S

Despite the team standings which saw Juniata finish ahead of just one team, the times on the men?s side were faster across the board from the meet Juniata ran on the same course a month ago. Leading the way was Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) whose time of 27:47 was nearly 45 seconds faster than his time last month and was good for a 152nd-place finish. Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) was second for the Eagle team and 191st overall, coming home in a time of 28:27. Ryan Conrad (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) had one of his top races of his freshman season finishing third for Juniata and 222nd in a time of 29:22, more than a minute faster than his earlier time on the course. Mike Vella (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) was 246th overall and finished in a time of 30:14. Right behind him with a time of 30:18 was Eric Hoover (Brandywine/Wilmington, De.) who finished 247th. Jason Hoover (Brandywine/Wilmington, De.) was the sixth runner for Juniata finishing two spots behind his brother and running a time of 30:33. Rounding out the scoring for the men was Jeremy Lampert (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) who finished 252nd and covered the 5.2 mile course in a time of 31:14.

Ryan Sheehan, an unattached runner, was the top finisher for the men as he ran the course in a time of 25:22.

WOMEN'S

The Eagle women were led by Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) who earned placed 194th in the race and covered the 6K course in a time of 23:56. Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep./Baltimore, Md.) was second for Juniata and crossed the line in a time of 24:38. Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) was close behind running a time of 24:45 which was good for 256th place. Lia Bella (Morris Cathoic/Rockaway, N.J.) finished fourth for the Eagles and posted a time of 26:02. Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) was Juniata?s fifth runner placing 258th overall in a time of 26:02. Juniata?s sixth and seventh runners finished in a pack as Christina Jones (Fallston/Bel Air, Md.) and Emily Landis (Christopher Dock/Harleysville) placed 268th and 270th in times of 26:43 and 26:49 respectively.

Kim Smith of Providence was the top finisher in the women?s race with a time of 19:46.

Juniata will run in its own invitational next weekend as the final tune-up before the MAC Championships.
