Loretto, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s and women?s cross country teams got off to strong starts in 2004 as both squads finished second out of three teams at the Saint Francis Tri-Meet in Loretto Friday afternoon. The Eagle women gave the home team a scare but fell just short falling 24-31. But the Eagles easily out-distanced Penn State Altoona by a 15-47 margin. On the men?s side Juniata topped Penn State-Altoona 16-43, but could not surpass Saint Francis, falling 15-50 to the home team.

Katey Glunt (Bellefonte/Bellefonte) ran an outstanding race for the women?s team as she came just seconds away from winning the overall race. Glunt covered the course in a time of 16:25.4, less than a second behind the winning time of 16:24.7. Glunt finished fourth in the race and was the top finisher for Juniata. The Eagles then brought in a pack of runners, led by Nancy Hayes (Westminster/Westminster, Md.) who placed fifth in the race. Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep/Baltimore, Md.) was right behind her in sixth place, and she was followed in by Sarah Bay (Central Dauphin/Harrisburg) who placed seventh. Rounding out the top-five for the Eagles was Lauren Gates (Bishop Guilfoyle/Altoona) who placed ninth.

Laura Beach of Saint Francis was the top finisher in the women?s race.

For the Juniata men Justin Fritzius (Central York/York) crossed the line first as he finished in ninth place with a time of 17:55.2. Fritzius barely outlasted teammate Mike Vellay (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) who placed 10th in a time of 17:55.7. Chris Sheaffer (Central York/York) was next for Juniata as he placed 11th in the race. Freshman Shawn Rumery (Thornton Academy/Dayton, Me.) made a solid showing in his first collegiate race by placing 12th. Jeremy Lampert (Portsmouth/Portsmouth, N.H.) capped Juniata?s scoring by finished 17th.

Chad Hartzell of Saint Francis finished first overall in the race as he covered the course in a time of 17:29.
